[interview] 'Pure' Oguri Shun
'Pure' Oguri Shun [18/11/09]:
The day of the photo shooting, with the concept "Purity". The set up stage can easily be taken for Oguri Shun's backstage room. Behind him a pair of jeans is stuck to the wall, on each side there is a number of costumes hung up on hangers and shoes are scattered here and there. To his front stands a large mirror - a magic mirror to be precise. From the other side of the mirror the cameras are taking pictures of Oguri's expression, as if he not supposed to even notice. It is meant to be pure as such. After the photo shooting has been completed, it is time for the following interview.
We'd like to present you three questions out of it:
Q1: What part don't you like about yourself?
A: My nose.
Q2: How are you doing lately?
A: I think, I am drinking too much. (laughs)
Q3: What's the fun part about being an actor?
A: It's a good way to unfold oneself.
After that, to draw a certain reaction from Oguri, two surprise guests are making their appearance - two girls from an American school.
[It was a surprise, since they were my English teachers. I think it would have been different if it had been Leah Dizon (laughs). But it was cute! I still don't have any children myself, but my brother has gotten a son just recently. I really came to like children. Children are so simple, they don't think about so many things and unlike today's photo shooting, they are pure just like that. I like that!]

[news] Oguri Shun, dripping wet

Actor Oguri Shun (26) attended the CM presentation for Sony Ericsson's 'Bravia Phone U1' waterproof mobile phone on the 11th.
During the product presentation at the assembly hall, Oguri, who was wearing a suit, was doused in a large amount of water. The CM needed 13 takes during filming. At every take, a huge amount of water was splashed on him. "There were about 5 or 6 pairs of suits that I wore. By the time I changed, the last suit would have dried already. It's the first time I've had to change my briefs so many times in a day. I was prepared with 10 pairs," he looked back with a smile.
The CM airs from the 12th onwards.

[news] Oguri's "Surely Someday" set for summer
In June, it was revealed that popular actor Shun Oguri (26) is making his directorial debut with a film titled "Surely Someday." Casting rumors have surfaced since then, but the distributor Shochiku finally announced some official details this week.
The story is loosely based on the bonds between Oguri and his friends from high school. The central cast consists of actors Keisuke Koide, Ryo Katsuji, Go Ayano, Ryohei Suzuki, and Tsuyoshi Muro. Additional cast members include Takashi Okamura (of Ninety-nine), Naoto Takenaka, Fuyuki Moto, and Satoshi Tsumabuki.
The five main characters form a band, hoping to gain popularity with their original song called "Surely Someday" at their school's cultural festival. Unfortunately, a foolish incident results in them dropping out of school. With their lives seemingly at a dead end, they take on the challenge of trying to turn their lives around.
Filming took place in July and August, and the project is now in editing. The film should be completed by January of next year, with a nationwide theatrical release planned for the summer.

I'm really looking forward to this! Ganbatte Shun!
But I wonder what happened to Inoue Mao & Abe Tsuyoshi...there was a report before implicating that they're confirmed to be in the movie, and Ueto Aya too...but they're not mentioned in this article...I'm hoping they're still going to be in this movie!
[news] To Whom Will Oguri Shun Send New Year Cards?
The actor Oguri Shun appears in a new series of commercials that have recently begun to be aired. The TV ads are for next year's New Year cards sold by Japan Post Service. Oguri plays the role of a suit-clad company employee. The costars include actor Terao Akira and actress Eikura Nana. In the first 'episode' titled 'Noticing (Recognizing)', a younger employee asks the senior employee (Oguri) his address. When they had filmed the scene where the two employees talk to each other, Oguri made lots of ad-lib remarks that entertained and impressed the staff.
Oguri recalled a fond memory he had concerning New Year cards. When he was still in middle school, he had appeared in a 'Taiga' drama. ['Taiga (大河)' dramas are historical TV dramas broadcast by NHK.] After the filming, he sent New Year cards to actor Takenaka Naoto, who had played the lead role in the drama. "For a couple of years I wrote to Takenaka-san 'Happy New Year. This is Oguri. I played the character 'Sakichi'. Takenaka-san still remembered. I was really happy when he told me 'You and I are New Year card friends.'"
[In Japanese New Year cards are called 'nengajo (年賀状)' and are a important part of Japanese culture. In the cards people usually write 'Akemashite omedeto-gozaimasu (lit. 'Let's celebrate the arrival of a new year.')'. The cards are sent to close relatives, friends and associates. Each year is named after an animal based on the Japanese zodiac [which in turn is based on the Chinese zodiac]. There are 12 animals that respond to the 12 year cycle; rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and boar. This year is the year of the ox, and next year (2010) will be the year of the tiger. We hope you enjoyed this Japanese culture trivia]

[news] Oguri’s cast is slowly getting leaked
The big names that are going to appear in Oguri Shun’s (26) directorial debut "Someday" are getting leaked left and right. The movie itself is supposed to open next spring and it already got leaked that Koide Keisuke (25) is going to get the starring role while Inoue Mao (22) and Ueto Aya (24) have also been mentioned to be part of the cast among many other big stars.
Oguri didn’t have much problems with finding his starring actor. He asked Koide and he immediately gave his agreement. Of course it won’t be a movie just with Koide. Inoue Mao and Abe Tsuyoshi (27) are going to co-star in this movie as well. Oguri’s junior Tanaka Kei (25) will have a role too, as well as his stage mate Katsudzi Ryo (23), Muro Tsuyoshi (33), Yoshida Koutarou (50) and a couple more.
Other interesting additions are the young rising actor Miura Haruma (19), the always amazing actress Konishi Manami (30) and not to forget Tenchijin’s big star and popular commercial actor Tsumabuki Satoshi (28). The latter is actually a very close friend of Oguri and so it was no surprise for him wanting to support is friend’s directorial debut. Movie insiders also claim that it’s his intention to have a suitable role for the always popular Ueto Aya who already starred in many movies and doramas up to now.

a star-studded cast indeed! and some of the actors Shun invited are good friends of his!
I'm thrilled that Mao-chan is included! I miss ShuMao!
and Abe Tsuyoshi too, he has become close friends with Shun since HYD.
I was expecting Ueto Aya because she was rumored to be in the movie before..but I didn't expect Koide Keisuke though...he & Shun had worked together before in 2007 for 'Kisaragi', I guess they've become good friends since then.
I was hoping he would invite his close buddy Matsujun too! seems like he didn't...maybe Matsujun's too busy with his Arashi commitments? *shrugs*
I also heard a rumor previously that Shun had also asked Yamapi from NewS to appear in the movie...now I guess not.
But there's still no official announcements on the casts yet, so at the moment, these are just the rumored casts...some of them might not appear in the movie after all.
I hope Mao-chan & Abe Tsuyoshi are true! It would be like a mini HYD reunion!
though it would be even better with Matsujun & Masuda Shota included too!
[news] Oguri Shun and Mizushima Hiro Not "Partners" But "Lovers"?
On October 8th at a hotel in Odaiba, Tokyo, a press conference was held for the new TV drama series to begin on October 19th titled ‘東京DOGS / Tokyo DOGS'. On that day a typhoon had landed and weather conditions were very bad. But Oguri Shun was unfazed. He seemed more excited about playing for the first time a lead role in a ‘getsuku' drama. [‘Gestsuku; 月9' literally means Mondays from 21:00. It is widely considered the time when the most popular dramas are broadcast.] “I hope the storm will bring in good luck for the drama. I'm going to give the drama all I've got.” Oguri plays the role of an elite detective belonging to the NYPD. Costar Mizushima Hiro becomes a police officer who is part of the Special Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Department. Together the two men tackle a hard to crack criminal case.
Along with Oguri and Mizushima, Yoshitaka Yuriko also attended the conference. She plays the role of a ‘mysterious woman'. Standing beside the two good-looking actors, Yoshitaka made everyone laugh by commenting “I'm beginning to have special feelings for the two. How can I help it?”
Oguri was then asked if he recently had felt any ‘special feelings' for somebody. Oguri answered “After filming on location in New York, we got on a plane to go back home. Hiro-kun began sleeping next to me, and when I saw his beautiful face I thought ‘I won't mind becoming lovers with Hiro.'” Mizushima quickly responded to Oguri's show of affection by talking about something that happened when the two actors had appeared in the same late-night music program. “When we were waiting back stage for our turn to appear, I told Shun-kun “You don't look like the type that gets nervous.” But he answered “Actually, I can't stand these kinds of situations.” He looked meek and very cute. He is usually extremely passionate about his work, but the way he acted that day was markedly different. He was really adorable.” After hearing Mizushima's comments Oguri quickly shot back “Let's start seeing each other after the whole drama's complete.”

[news] 'Tokyo DOGS' Press Conference
A press conference for Tokyo Dogs was held at a Tokyo hotel on 8th October. The theme for the Monday night drama this autumn is 'Getsu Kyun'. (Monday Kyun. kyun: momentary tightening of one's chest caused by powerful feelings, heart twinges) This catch phrase was coined in the hopes of a return to the popularity of dramas in the heydays when office ladies would disappear from the streets at night as they head home to watch a drama. In attendance were lead actor Oguri Shun as Takakura Sou, his buddy Kudo Maruo played by Mizushima Hiro and Yoshitaka Yuriko who has her first heroine role in a Getsu 9 drama as Matsunaga Yuki.
Oguri started off the interview."The cast and staff members are really fun and everyday is just 'kyunkyun'. To prepare for this detective role, I had a gunbelt strapped on while just going about my daily life so that I'll get used to carrying a gun. Since I'm doing this, I want to do it like my life depends on it,"he said enthusiastically. About the combination with his buddy Mizushima, he said,"I'm happy to have such a reliable partner and co-actor. He's polite and approaches work very seriously. On the plane back from NY after filming, I was looking at his sleeping face and I thought how great it would be to be Mizushima Hiro (*laugh*). Maybe we'd start going out after the drama ends."
Mizushima said,"Oguri-kun's character is always cool, while the character I play Maruo is the complete opposite. I want to portray that well. I'm challenging myself to things I would not normally do too. Playing a detective without a uniform, a leather jacket as his trademark, and growing out a beard and moustache." About Yoshitaka, he talked about her appeal. "What's charming about her is that you can never guess what she is going to do next so you never lose interest. I'm also looking forward to the different kinds of expressions she will show in her acting from now on. She might be the actress who I could most naturally connect with among all the ones I have co-starred with so far."
Yoshitaka commented,"I'm giving a lot of thought to how to play a woman who has lost her memory. There are many occasions when she is distressed. It's a difficult role but it's an enjoyable working environment with laughter from the cast and staff members always. I'm happy with the fantastic atmosphere." On working with Oguri and Mizushima she said,"We're always together during filming. Flanked by two gorgeous men makes everyday 'kyunkyun'. Usually we just talk about nonsense and there's a lot of joking around too. But when it comes to acting, there's no one cooler than them in expressing themselves."
EXILE is singing the theme song 'Futatsu no Kuchibiru'. Tokyo Dogs starts October 19 at 9pm. The first episode is 15 minutes longer.

[news] 2010; the year of the dorama sequels? [5/10/09]:
2010; the year of the dorama sequels? [5/10/09]:
The situation for TV stations in Japan seems get more serious season after season. Dropping advertising revenues and a rapidly declining number of viewers force them to reduce the costs at all ends and doramas are no exception.
You might have already noticed that this upcoming fall season there are going to be a a couple more sequels than usual with doramas such as "Liar Game 2", "Sono Otoko, Fuku-Shocho 3" or "Koshonin 2". The magazine Shukan Josei now reports that we will continue to see this trend towards sequels of popular older doramas instead of putting a lot of money into new projects and the new sets that would come with them throughout the next seasons.
Of course, we still have original projects such as "Tokyo DOGS" starring Oguri Shun, but don’t be surprised to find out that Fuji TV actually saved a lot of money on this one as well. Apparently they are going to put a lot of money into Oguri’s directorial debut that’s going to release next year and in return he had to appear in their Monday-09pm dorama slot, hoping that he could boost up their ratings again. Whether he even had to do it for less money is not known, but it wouldn’t be that surprising anymore. Of course Fuji TV is denying those rumors, "We’ve never heard anything about such a deal. We have a high opinion in the dorama’s content and in Oguri’s abilities as an actor."
read the whole article at kawaii-joyuu.
oh dear...seems this and last season's jdoramas haven't been doing very well lately in the ratings...compared to last year's jdoramas...could the problem be the dramas themselves? Not interesting enough for the viewers?
I've been observing the ratings for this season's jdoramas, and much of them aren't doing very well...around 'mediocre' or so...only a few of the dramas are doing quite well with double digits.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Shun's Tokyo DOGS! But by the sound of things, it sounds like he has a lot of pressure on him, Fuji TV is counting on him to push up their ratings. But with his popularity, and talent as an actor, I'm sure he'll do great!
I'm also looking forward to the movie that he'll be directing! Ganbatte![news] Oguri Quits Being CEO for Another Job?
The actors Oguri Shun, Asano Tadanobu, Miyazawa Rie and Eita are all appearing in the same commercial series for the chocolate snack ‘OTONA GLICO'. In the TV ads the actors play the roles of the various characters that appear in the popular anime ‘サザエさん / Sazae-san', but with a twist. The commercials portray the characters 25 years into the future (thus the series are dubbed ‘Isono family [last name of main character] 25 years later'). In the newest version Ikura-chan (Oguri), who is a CEO of an IT-related company, starts a conversation with Tara-chan (Eita). While chatting on Ikura-chan's private jet, Ikura-chan suggested he is contemplating a job change. Viewers are bound to be interested in the outcome.
In the above mentioned scene Ikura-chan says “Okay, let's go on our last flight.” He and Tara-chan go on board, and eventually fly past the Isono residence. From the plane Tara-chan manages to find Ikura-chan's brother and sister, although they are only the size of peas. “Hey! That's Katsuo [brother] and Wakame [sister]. Whoa, Katsuo let go of his bat [and made it sail off into the air].” As with all the other versions, the TV ad ends with Katsuo messing up while practicing baseball. The portrayal of peaceful everyday lives matches the style of the original anime.
If one looks closely at the latest version, it is possible to see how much the staff paid attention to detail. The pilot uniform worn by Ikura-chan has the words ‘Ikura' printed on them, and his badge is made out of ‘ikura'. [‘Ikura; イクラ' is salmon roe] Eita was especially impressed. “Above all, that ikura badge is superb.” Oguri agreed, and said it was one of his favorite items too. “Yeah. I can feel the staff's love.”

[news] Oguri becomes charming brother
Oguri Shun and Kawashima Umika will appear in a new set of TV ads for an instant soup brand. Oguri has been appearing in the same brand’s commercials from 2007. Kawashima will play the role of Oguri’s sister. She sounded really taken with her ‘brother’ 12 years older than her. “I’ve always dreamed of having such a charming brother!”
In the new commercials, one morning the sister wakes up late and frantically gets ready to go to school. The brother hands her a bowl of warm soup saying “Before you go, at least drink some soup.” The TV ads show the sister being moved by her brother’s kindness, while their grandmother (played by Ikeuchi Junko) gently watches the two from a short distance away. The commercials are meant to express the warmth that permeates through everyday interactions between family members.
Oguri commented about Kawashima like he was her real brother. “If I had such a cute sister, I would always be worried about her.” Kawashima smiled and replied “He is my ideal brother!” Both of them seemed to have enjoyed the filming.
